Learn the basics of screenprinting—an artistic, yet economical, method for producing prints from digital or hand-drawn designs. This workshop will prepare you to work independently in the darkroom and studio. You will learn how to prepare images, expose a screen, and print a single color (layer) with water-based inks on paper. Each student will leave with several prints of their own design. Level: Beginner – no experience necessary Registration closes October 3, 2026. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students will need to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email. Sample by Kevin Velazquez WORKSHOP SUPPLIES: Registration includes a $36 materials fee to cover the materials supplied in class, including emulsion, tape, ink, paper, and access to a silkscreen for class use.In addition, students are requested to bring the following items: (optional) Personal apron (we’ll have extras) or wear clothes that can get a bit messy (optional) Pencil and paper (if you want to take notes) A high contrast, black and white image to work with*—more specific details will be provided at registration Note: If you think you’d like to keep printing beyond the class, new 20×24” silkscreens are available for purchase for $30. You’ll have the option to purchase one at checkout. MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Jeanette M. Bolden is a visual artist and screen printer based in Maryland. She has a B.A. in Studio Arts from the University of Maryland, College Park. Her work is characterized by vivid colors and semi-nonrepresentational composition, forming a microcosm that represents the intangible and reveals the nuances of the tangible. Memory, nature, and the intersection between internal and external realities are central themes in her practice. Through her art, she investigates how emotions and fleeting moments can be made visible. The act of repetition within screenprinting opens the door to new interpretations, leading Bolden to acquire a new language. A language that uses color and shapes to speak to people, to fill in the gaps that words cannot. Of late, Bolden and her co-collaborator, Ennis R. Hodgson, displayed abstract pieces in 2025 at Collaborate / kəˈlabəˌrāt, a group show at Gallery Y in Washington, D.C. The year prior, she was the lead instructor for the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) 2024 Black History Month and Visual Arts Summer Internship program. In 2023, Bolden participated in Transformer Gallery’s Exercises for Emerging Artists program. She interned with Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in 2022 while simultaneously co-teaching for the M-NCPPC Hispanic Heritage Month and Visual Arts Internship program. Awards include The Washington Print Club’s 2021 Young Printer Award and a feature in the fall 2021 issue of On Paper: Journal of The Washington Print Club.
