Join Riverside Pride for a special free community screening of Unidad in celebration of LGBTQ+ History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month. Unidad explores LGBTQ+ experiences, identity, culture, and community, creating space to reflect on the stories and voices that have helped shape our communities. Following the screening, join us for a filmmaker discussion and Q&A, offering an opportunity to hear directly from the filmmakers, learn more about the film, and engage in conversation about its themes and impact. Seating is limited, please make sure to RSVP for tickets here: UNIDAD: Gay & Lesbian Latinos Unidos is an award-winning documentary that chronicles the history and legacy of Gay & Lesbian Latinos Unidos (GLLU), founded in Los Angeles in 1981. GLLU emerged during a pivotal period following the Stonewall uprising and just before the HIV/AIDS crisis, creating an important space for LGBTQ+ Latinos who were often marginalized both within mainstream LGBTQ+ movements and within Latino/Chicano communities. Through interviews with original GLLU members, archival materials, and personal stories, the film explores LGBTQ+ Latino activism, community organizing, the experiences of Latina lesbians, the HIV/AIDS crisis, intersectional identity, and the importance of preserving community history. The film remains highly relevant today because it demonstrates how communities that were once overlooked created their own organizations, built movements, mentored future generations, and helped lay the groundwork for many of the LGBTQ+, Latino, HIV/AIDS, women's rights, and civil rights movements that continue today. PBS describes GLLU as the Los Angeles area's first major Queer Latin@ organization and emphasizes the film's connection to LGBTQ+ equality, women's rights, and civil rights history. Presented at the Civil Rights Institute, the screening provides an opportunity to connect this history to the broader Riverside and Inland Southern California community and to encourage dialogue about representation, activism, cultural memory, and the importance of documenting stories that have historically been left out of mainstream histories.
