About this event
October 1, 2026–January 24, 2027 Contemporary art constantly reinvents itself, and our recent gifts and acquisitions reflect the bold experimentation shaping object-making today. Working in media as varied as chocolate and cardboard, rhinestones and velvet, porcelain and bone, artists transform unexpected materials into works that surprise, challenge, and delight. Look closely: A miniature rocking chair. A towering goddess head. Gilded flowers. Gold-foil rats. We seek out artists whose innovative processes— from hair-braiding and riveting to lathering and laser-cutting—disrupt expectations and expand our understanding of what art can be. This exhibition also reveals how we cultivate our collection, through both philanthropic support and thoughtful curatorial choices. Each work represents a connection between artists, collectors, and the museum. Guided by a groundbreaking commitment to contemporary art, The Wadsworth actively builds our collection by forging these relationships, bringing new voices and perspectives into conversation in our galleries. Taking Shape celebrates the people and partnerships that foster contemporary art and offers a glimpse of where The Wadsworth’s growing collection might go next.
