About this event
BridgeLUC and the Criminal Justice Organization (CJO) are co-hosting a structured and respectful dialogue on the death penalty for about 25 to 30 students. The event runs one hour. Attendees will arrive and sit at assigned tables of 5 to 6 people, each with a BridgeLUC or CJO facilitator, and CJO members and non-members will be mixed at every table. Leaders from both organizations will open with a short welcome and ground rules for the conversation: listen to understand, speak from personal experience, and no debating to win. Next, attendees will take part in a quick opening spectrum activity, either standing along a "strongly agree to strongly disagree" side of the room , with a few volunteers explaining their positions. A CJO member will then give a brief, neutral overview of how capital punishment works in the US legal system, including Illinois' abolition of it in 2011. The main portion of the event is a 20-minute small-group dialogue, in which facilitators guide each table through prompts about the personal values behind their views, the strongest argument from the other side, and where they feel uncertain. Participation is voluntary, and attendees may pass on any prompt. The event will close with a short full-group debrief on points of agreement and points that stayed difficult, followed by announcements of future events from both organizations. --- Event Details: https://lucommunity.luc.edu/rsvp?id=385375
